January 10th 2006: Issue 63

After 4 months of production, thanks to my tireless cast and crew, I am finally screening the short film I shot as part of my masters degree at the New School University, Within Limits, at the Korean American Shorts Festival New York (KASFNY) this Saturday. It's been a long undertaking and I am exciting to be able to take part in the festival, which I am helping to organize as well. We will be screening 10 short films from up-and-coming Korean American filmmakers from both New York and Los Angeles at the Anthology Film Archives. Highlights include Ken, a gangster film starring Rick Yune's younger brother Karl Yune, Jesus Henry Christ, by Student Academy Awards-Silver Medalist Dennis Lee, and a wacky comedy called Dr. Miracles by Randall Park who is currently a castmember of MTV's Wild 'N Out.

The 2007 festival will be held in conjunction with other planned celebrations in New York for Korean American Day (officially January 13th nationwide) called the Youth Art Festival and is planned by the New York Korean Association. For more information on other Korean American Day events, go to thier site.

On an unrelated note, a close friend of a colleague with two young sons was recently diagonosed with leukemia at the age of 33 and in desperate need of a bone marrow donor. They are hosting a drive on tommorrow, January 11th 3:00 - 8:00pm at IQEQ Fundamentals, 45-63 Bell Blvd, Bayside, NY 11361. Go to www.marrow.org for more info.

KASFNY is a small, intimate festival meant to showcase and celebrate work by Korean American directors, producers, and actors, traditionally underrepresented in mainstream media. The aim is to help provide an arena where audiences and artists in the filmmaking community can converge to showcase and feature new Korean American cinema. Its the first New York shorts festival focused exclusively on Korean American filmmakers, themes, or actors.

The program focuses on diversity and passion, rather than polish and production value. A variety of formats are represented including, narrative, documentary, experimental, music video, and MOS. The one-day festival will feature 10 screenings of short films by up-and-coming Korean American directors at the Anthology Film Archives. See www.koreanx.net/kasfny for film synopsis and director bios. The festival will be followed by a short Q&A and an afterparty for more intimate conversation with the filmmakers and networking.
