January 18th 2006: Issue 46

Sorry for the long absence... Before it gets any later, I'd like to wish you a happy (belated) New Year and happy (early) Chinese New Year! On January 29th, 2006, the Year of the Rooster (You) and all its bad luck will be ushered out by the coming Year of the Dog (Xu) 4704. With that on the horizon, look for the inevitable flood of Lunar New Year and dog-themed events in the coming weeks (insert Jay Leno dog-eating joke here). And I also owe you a belated Korean-American Day (January 13th), now an official U.S. holiday and only passed last December by the House of Representatives.

And with the coming year, look the release of several films starring (or made) by your favorite KA talents. With filmmakers, KA filmmaker Michael Kang's official Sundance Film Festival selection last year, The Motel, is set to get a theatrical release in June, while Better Luck Tommorrow director Justin Lin has two film releases: Annapolis next week and the third installment of Fast and the Furious on June 16th. For actors, recent Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh is set to star in Hard Candy (April 14th), 3 Needles (TBA) along with Chloe Sevigny, and The Night Listener (TBA) with Robin Williams, while John Cho (another Better Luck Tommorrow alumn) will appear in American Dreamz (April 14th) with Hugh Grant.

The Promise, the highest grossing film in all time Chinese history, and at a cost of $35 million, also the highest-budgeted, starring Korean megastar Jang Dong-Gun will no longer be distributed in North America. The Weinstein Co. spent seven months collaborating with the producers of the Chinese fantasy epic, at one point cutting the film 20 minutes, and changing the beginning and the ending. The main disagreements came over the distribution strategy of the film, which is China's entry in the foreign language film Oscar race. I guess I'll have to download it off the Internet...

Monroe Township, New Jersey

Rooted in the telling of one family's life, The Chopsticks-Fork Principle: A Memoir and Manual by Cathy Bao Bean is a story for all families. In this humorous and poignant memoir, the author, an immigrant from China, recounts how she figured out how to be herself, as well as raise a son whose artist father did things like paint the lawn. As Cathy Bao Bean attempts to satisfy disparate cultural norms, she provides us with a unique window into the experience of a bicultural family. The Chopsticks-Fork Principle also explains how anyone who steps outside the home can benefit by greater awareness of the diversity within and around us. "No father - especially an immigrant from China - says to his daughter, "Please, marry an artist" says Bao Bean.

More than 1,000 Asian and Western artists will get together for this spectacular event of music, dance, acrobatics, and world-class entertainment for the whole family.

This year's "Myths and Legends," blends Chinese and Western performances into an energetic mix of song, dance, drama and humor, with a twist. The "Myths and Legends" presented provide a vehicle to reconnect Chinese people with their rich heritage, and westerners with a world of traditions unknown, but yet deeply moving. Continuing the success of past Galas, this year there will be three performances in New York. Moving Time was conceived to celebrate the new time and the new beginning for the KCSNY as it marks the first exhibition of the year 2006. By making diverse range of global video art accessible to the public, the exhibition introduces the basics of video art such as medium's inherent characteristics (affordability, portability, transferability, manipulative quality, intimacy and its capacity for instantaneous transmission for image etc.) and its wide and ever expanding sub-categories. Moving Time salutes and explores video art's capacity to represent time not only as a theme but also as a constituent parameter of the nature of video art. Whether it is a work contemplating on the notions of temporal magnitude; protracted duration in ambiguous narrative and slow motion or temporal compression in electronic-collage or animation incorporating super- advanced technology, or exploring temporal matrix, temporal moment, temporal direction, or temporal event, the works in Moving Time have been selected to demonstrate individual's identification, translation and expression of time with e/motions; that is motion, emotion and electric motion. The curators of this exhibition give thanks to 30 most innovative, supportive and generous artists who have agreed in joy to pay humble but heart felt tribute to Nam June Paik who has been influential in every area of video art since he unleashed it in 1965. It is an honor to have Nam June Paik-the father of video art-as the special guest artist in Moving Time.

The exhibition consists of three parts, each containing works of 10 artists to be shown for 10 days. Nam June Paik's works will be on view at all times. The Korean Cultural Service will present Nam June Paik's seminal video works from the 60's and 70's. The exhibition will also feature recent work of 30 national and international artists representing different generations and different cultural perspectives.

The Coachman (Maboo) (1961)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 96min
Directed by Kang Dae-jin
Starring Kim Seung-Ho, Shin Young-Kyun, Hwang Jeong-Sun, Cho Mi-Ryeong, and Kang Dae-Jin

The Coachman tells the tale about single father with two sons and two daughters makes a living by operating a horse-drawn cart. However, in a city that is modernizing after the destruction of the Korean War, automobiles are making such carts obsolete, and he struggles to make ends meet. The family's younger generation is also experiencing difficulties. The eldest son hopes to pass the bar exam to become a lawyer, but he has flunked twice already and is feeling pessimistic about his third try. The eldest daughter, who is mute, is married to an abusive husband. The younger daughter tries to move up in life by posing as a rich university student, while the youngest son has a penchant for petty theft. At its heart, this film is a drama told with warmth and sympathy about a family trying to life its way out of poverty and into the middle class. The challenges they face would have been familiar to many of its viewers in 1961, from the cruel and dismissive attitude of the upper classes to the pressure to pay back debts. The Coachman was the first Korean film to win a major overseas award, taking home the Silver Bear (Special Jury Prize) from the 1961 Berlin International Film Festival. Guest Speaker Ms. Hyun-Ock Im will briefly introduce the film and lead a discussion after the end of the movie.

Saturday, January, 28th, 10:00am - 6:00pm
Columbus Park
Mulberry Street between Bayard & Worth Streets
New York City
www.explorechinatown.com

January 29, 2006 is the first day of the Lunar New Year for 4704 - the Year of the Dog. Celebrations will last for fifteen days afterwards, but preparations including cleaning and ecorating the home can begin as early as two weeks prior. The market, typically held one to two days prior to the New Year, is a significant kick-off event in many Asian countries. The flower is one of the most important and symbolic decorations: "fa" in Cantonese shares homonymic qualities to the word for fortune, "fat." Therefore, to have flowers blooming in one's home during the New Year is a prosperous and fortuitous sign. Among the propitious plants and flowers are azaleas, dahlias, chrysanthemums, peach and plum blossoms, peonies, narcissi and small orange trees.

The Flower Market bursts with the colors and fragrances of auspicious plants and blossoms widely used decoratively by Chinese as symbols of prosperity, fortune and abundance. This year, the Flower Market reinvents tradition by incorporating performers and artists, who will contribute to the festive, family atmosphere. Last year's Flower Market attracted a diverse, multi-generational audience of 70,000 visitors and was attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields, and Council Members Alan Gerson and John C. Liu. This year, the organizers have also invited participating florists to compete for a $100 prize for Best Floral Design.

Several Chinese artists, arts organizations, and performers are confirmed to participate in the two-day event. They include:

  • Jean Liu, Chinese Knotting Demo
  • Winnie Tsai, Calligraphy Demo
  • Kunqu Society: Make-up & Costume Demo
  • New York Chinese Cultural Center: Face Painting & Paper Cutting Demo
  • Duc Sun Tong, Chinese Culture Art Association: Portrait Panting Demo

Kerrigan Campbell art + projects is pleased to present "In America", a two-person show exploring aspects of American identity as perceived by two artists born into other cultures. Our perception of the world is formed by a set of beliefs, accumulated over many years. In the media age these beliefs are filtered first through the mainstream media; movies, television, radio and now the internet. Over the last half century American popular culture has become the dominant cultural source worldwide. For Korean-born Haejae Lee and Swiss-born Sandra Nydegger the American West as portrayed by John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies and TV shows like Bonanza typified their image of the quintessential "American" culture because of the influence in their of youth of U.S.-exported mass media.

    5. For plays, we prefer solo, monologues, though we aren't strict about this; and due to length restrictions, authors should select the appropriate excerpt to best convey their work;
