February 6th 2004: Issue 01
Welcome to the Koreanxchange Community Events Mailing List. No, you probably didn't sign up, but for those of you who were getting the K2 Productions emails from me the past few years know that we had a "Community Events and Opportunities" section which we promoted things that are going on in the community. This mailer is a continuation of that. I've gotten a lot of requests to keeping sending them out, and truthfully, the lack of major KA media sources here in the New York metro area causes a major disconnect from a lot of worthy events/opportunities from getting attention.
So anyway, this mailer will be profiling different events and opportunities going on in the community that I think that are worthwhile. Feel free to send me worthy events, but since this is free, I'll be master and commander to what gets profiled and not. Please refrain from sending your typical K-town party promos. If you are looking to party, I'm sure you'll find a place. Unless I decide to do it again. Then it goes in. Just kidding. I bet you $20 that you can find a party's info within 3 clicks in a Korean person's Xanga page. Kind of like 3-degrees of Xanga separation. I digress.
One event of note is the theatrical release of Greg Pak's Robot Stories. Remember how all that underground promotion helped Better Luck Tomorrow get such a great release? Well, Greg Pak is a Korean-American, and quite frankly, very well-respected in the indie film community. Robot Stories opens next week. Lets all pull together and help him have a succesful release. I'll be helping to host a premiere party for the movie next Friday the 13th at this incredible hotel lounge called Gallery in the lobby of the Gerswhin hotel. It's going to be a pretty happening party. Stay tuned--I'll send that out on Tuesday.
Anyway, welcome to the mailer, and if you want off, just reply with "GET ME OFF THIS F##KING LIST!!". No, don't do that. I got enough of those already.

On Friday, February 13, Greg Pak, award winning writer and director, is releasing his first feature film in New York City. For a truly independent film like Robot Stories, the first weekend of its release in each city is critical. There must be incredible business in those first three days to ensure a second and third week. The February 13 premiere in New York is especially important, as other theaters around the country are waiting to see how the film does in New York before booking it in their cities. Make sure to spread the word so we can keep Robot Stories in theaters and show the film industry that there is a market for Asian American films.
Robot Stories has already won over 23 Film Festival awards and features many local NY Asian American actors, as well as film veterans like Tamlyn Tomita (Joy Luck Club and Sab Shimono (The Big Hit). Greg edits FilmHelp.com and AsianAmericanFilm.com and was recently named one of Filmmaker Magazine's 25 Filmmakers to Watch.
Stay tuned for the Robot Stories Official Premiere Party Sponsored by Bombay Sapphire on Friday, February 13th at Gallery in the Gershwin Hotel on 27th Street and 5th Ave.

Im Kwon-Taek (born in 1936 in Jangsung), South Korea's most celebrated filmmaker, has made close to one hundred films since his first, Farewell Duman River, in 1962. His direct, fluid work covers the extraordinary history and culture of the Korean peninsula. Whether investigating contemporary morality, Buddhism, the social restrictions constraining women, Korea's civil war, Japan's occupation of Korea, the customs of past Korean dynasties, or the practice of art, Im's films map popular sentiment and illuminate national concerns. Most important, they tell good stories. The Museum of Modern Art salutes one of international cinema's great directors with a fifteen-film selection from his comprehensive body of work, including his most recent film, Chihwaseon, for which he was awarded the prize for Best Director at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

Asia Society invites you to the launch of a new series on Democracy and Dissent - The Global Perspective on the War on Terrorism with: Tariq Ali, Editor, New Left Review and political commentator, Dana Robert Dillon, Senior Policy Analyst, The Heritage Foundation; American security expert, South and Southeast Asia Adrian Karatnycky, Counselor and Senior Scholar, Freedom House (moderator). Following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the U.S., the Bush administration responded by declaring a global war on terrorism and enacted laws and orders that some may regard as having undermined civil liberties and democratic norms, both here and abroad. This view supports the position
that the fundamental issue of dissent, which is integral to civil and political rights, is severely compromised by this new global order.
The Asia Society panel discussion examines the global context of the US's war on terrorism, the consequences and implications of US policy in Asia, and its regional impact on issues of national security and sovereignty. The panelists will address the following issues: What are the new rules under
which the War on Terrorism will be fought? Is there a paradigm shift? Must there be a trade-off between ensuring security and protecting civil liberties? Are there challenges to this new global imperative? Join us for a discussion on these and other pertinent issues. Advance Registration or ticket purchase is highly recommended. A credit card is required to hold a reservation. Please call the Box Office at 212-517-ASIA or send complete information by fax to 212-517-8315 or email: boxo@asiasoc.org

Held in Collaboration with (List in formation): New York Seoul; Korea Economic Institute (KEI); KWR International; U.S.-Korea Business Council; William B. May Stanley C. Gale, Chairman and CEO of The Gale Company, will address the historic partnership between his company and POSCO E&C to build and develop New Songdo City, to be located on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land along Incheon's waterfront. A project with enormous geopolitical implications, New Songdo City is a major component in the planned transformation of South Korea into the hub of Northeast Asia. It also represents the first US/Korea real estate joint venture in the history of Korea. When completed in 10 years and at a cost of $20 billion, the fully planned ultramodern city will be the size of downtown Boston. New Songdo City will be built very much like New York City with a central park, convention center and central high-rises. Designed to support the needs of modern businesses and the lifestyles of those who run them, it promises to have the best of retail shopping, living quarters, office buildings, museums, hospitals, schools and will include amenities such as a Jack Nicklaus golf course. Among the topics for discussion, Mr. Gale will address: How does a New Jersey-based real estate development firm plan to change the map of South Korea? CASTING CALL
Fun Couples Wanted For New Bravo Television Series
Are you and your spouse happily in love, but you still manage to drive each other crazy?? Does your spouse do things that just get under your skin? Bravo is seeking couples for an exciting new series that takes an affectionate, light-hearted look at your relationship and the little quirks about your partner that you've complained about again and againˇ¦.
"She has no sense of direction!"
"He's so rude to waiters!"
"She takes forever to get ready!"
"He monopolizes the remote control!"
"His snoring keeps me up all night!"
If you've ever wanted to prove that your partner's annoying habits are worse than your own, now is your chance! For two weeks, your home will be transformed into a full-scale surveillance operation as you try to catch each other at your own game to prove that your spouse's behavior is as bad as you say! At the end of the filming period, a jury of your friends and a "relationship expert" will have the final verdict in deciding who really is the most irritating to live with! We are currently casting fun-loving, energetic couples that have an obvious affection for one another, despite the little pet peeves that drive them crazy about their spouse. We are seeking a broad range of ethnic backgrounds and will highlight couples with various living arrangements and lifestyles. Potential couples must meet the following criteria:
-You live within three hours of New York City
-You are in a stable, long-term relationship and have been living together for a substantial amount of time
-You are confident, attractive and full of energy
-You both have a fun-loving, competitive spirit and are excited about winning the game
The tone of the show is playful and good-natured, so we're looking for couples that are accepting of their partner's faults, but are willing to have fun with them. If you're ready to be playful and sneaky in order to get the evidence you need to prove your point, we'd love to hear from you!
