February 23rd 2004: Issue 03

Thanks to everyone who showed up the weekend of the 13th to both the Robot Stories Premiere Party as well the movie screening itself. The opening weekend was a sucess! With sold out showings on opening night and strong showings through the weekend, Robot Stories got extended another week. Greg Pak sincerely thanks the entire KA community to come rally behind him.

There are a few interesting events happening this week—one in particular is Presidential Elections forum happening today. Sorry if you are getting this late. I spoke to the organizer of the event and he said that it will be an information session and public forum that will give people the opportunity to learn more about the Presidential election process from primaries to the general election. The second part of the forum will present the audience with a general strategy and practical action plan for the Korean American community that will enable the community to their voice concerns.

This may be old news to some of you, but in SoHo, there's this store called Saigoniste that sells house wares, and whose "clever" company mascot is a character named Ho Chi Mama. According to the store owner, Ho Chi Mama is "very empowered, [and] very cool", even though she spouts fortune-cookie-like broken English precepts like "Ho Chi Mama say 'Soft glow of tea light turns every dinner into hot date'." If you have a moment, read the NY Times article or sign the petition online and help get this misappropriation of culture changed.

The show, featuring four acrobatic chefs preparing a wedding banquet in an atmosphere charged with rivalry and a little romance, been called STOMP meets Jackie Chan on the set of the Iron Chef...and the New York Times called it "A Savory Stew of Skillful, High Energy, Good Fun," while Newsweek called it "Spectacular!"

Groups of 10 or more get preferred seating, and if you have a group of 10, you can even request that a man and a woman in your party be selected to be part of the show, as the "Bride and Groom" who are the lucky recipients of the day's big meal. GALLERY EXHIBITION
Work It! Images of Women in Hip-Hop
Curated by Isolde Brielmaier

February 20th - March 27th
The Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery
516 West 25th Street Suite 306
New York City
www.eyejammie.com

The Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to announce Work It! Images of Women in Hip-Hop, a special photographic tribute to the ladies of hip-hop. It is the gallery's featured exhibit for Black History Month (February 2004). The show presents sparkling images of the most prominent women ever to rock a mike, many of these images created by women photographers. Work It! is curated by Isolde Brielmaier, a hip-hop head with a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

"This show is going to blow up the commonly-held misconception that women in hip-hop must be 'bitches' or 'ho's,’” says Ms. Brielmaier. "On the contrary, we'll see women performers in full control of their image and their careers." Work It! showcases photos of female hip-hoppers onstage, in the studio, on the set of music videos and movies, and chilling behind the scenes with their friends, colleagues, and families.

The ladies of Work It! include Sylvia Robinson, Sequence (featuring a young Angie Stone), Roxanne Shante, Sparky D, Salt-N-Pepa, MC Lyte, Jazzy Joyce, Ms. Melodie, Queen Latifah, Mary J. Blige, Yo Yo, Lil?Kim, Foxy Brown, Wendy Williams, Aaliyah, Eve, and Missy Elliot, and Lauryn Hill among others. Photographers in the show include Janette Beckman, Sue Kwon, Maggie Trakas, Julie Gueraseva, Diana McClure, Val Wilmer, Charlie Ahearn, Michael Benabib, David Corio, Al Pereira, and Ronnie Wright. "Hip-hop has always been a very male arena," notes Eyejammie's Bill Adler. "Every woman who's ever dared to call herself a rapper deserves some respect. Black History Month provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their achievements."

Eyejammie is the only fine arts gallery in New York dedicated to the art and photography of hip-hop and is owned and operated by hip-hop veteran Bill Adler.
