February 23rd 2007: Issue 66
There are a few interesting events coming up in the next few days. Most notably, the IFC Center's will be running a special Bong Joon-Ho mini festival, screening the director's filmography, including his latest sci-fi action blockbuster The Host, last year's top grossing movie in South Korea. The director will be at Tuesday's screening for a Q&A and reception.
The bad news for Asian media just keeps coming. First layoffs at AZN. Now quite possibly the company with the strongest brand (but no audience) in the Asian media space, MTV, has announced that it is shutting down its regular DirecTV television programming of MTVK. MTV Networks announced recently that it has cut 250 jobs this week, which included all of MTV World's multicultural channals, MTV Desi, MTV Chi, and MTV K. On the flip side, AZN will be hosting their 2nd annual Asian Excellence Awards on May 16th in Los Angeles.
And if you ask the major newspapers in New York city, not only is South Korea a country whose women are infatuated with plastic surgery (according to the Wall Street Journal) but if you saw the front page of the New York Times yesterday, you were tempted to believe that it is also a country made of men use brokers to marry Vietnamese girls.

EXHIBITION
The Armory Show
The Armory Show, the International Fair of New Art, is the world's leading art fair devoted exclusively to contemporary art. In its ninth annual exhibition, The Armory Show 2007 will present 148 international galleries, including many of the most important contemporary dealers showcasing new art from around the world.
The Armory, largest of New York's contemporary art fairs, adds emerging artist spaces this year to the usual brigade of booths by established galleries like Roebling Hall and Pace Wildenstein. Known for its innovative programming, newcomer CANADA gallery sports a number of impressive artists - including Xylor Jane, whose drawings show her to be a virtuoso with hand-drawn lines, and Brian Belott, an artist who curates found ephemera including photographs and records. Korea's Arario Gallery, another newbie to the fair, represents many great artists as well, including Hyungkoo Lee, whose skeletal sculptures of popular cartoon characters are not to be missed. -Flavorpill

Psy, the Korean K-pop dance singer, will be performing for the first time on Saturday, March 17th at the New York City Nokia Theater. According to the Konglish website, JL Entertainment claims:
"With the records established by "Crazy Audience", "All Night Stand", and "Summer Stand" of 2006 under his belt, Psy, the most energetic performer in the Republic of Korea, is in essence attempting to create a "Korean Wave" of his own through the upcoming New York City and Los Angeles concerts. It¡¯s not just his fan base and avid super-fans who attend Psy's concerts, which ranked first in last year's audience poll as the best in concert performance, and first in audience reviews. This is why audiences receive pure enjoyment from his concerts, and the responses are all the more fervent. Targeting the teens, twenty-and thirty-somethings, as well as audiences in their forties, Psy created the 'standing' concert, and his audiences responded happily and crazily. In his concerts in 2006, Psy re-invented his audience and turned them into the famed 'crazy audience'. His audiences don¡¯t just look on, they turn it on-indeed, they go crazy. Thanks to the wild excitement of his concerts, Psy's performance was voted number one in the "Best Concert of the Year" category in a poll conducted by an internet ticket seller at the end of 2006."
So what are you waiting for? Super-fans unite! Receive pure enjoyment both happily and crazily! Somebody needs to fire their PR company.
