March 9th 2005: Issue 29
Think you aren't baised or prejudiced? Now a new test created by Project Implicit, which represents a collaborative research effort between researchers at Harvard, the UVa, and UWash provides powerful evidence that a majority of us really are. There's even one testing for bias towards Asian Americans. And in one explicit case of cultural bias (not necessarily bad though), Time has produced several photo essays on Asians and their influence on modern American style.
Sandra Oh is quite busy these days. After getting attention in her regular role on HBO's Arli$$ in 1996, she has been starring a string of films lately, most notably, Sideways and Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity. Lately, she is set to star in a Korean production Smells Like Butter, about a professionally successful Korean American woman somewhat past marriageable age who comes back to Korea under pressure from her parents to find a Korean husband. Another KA girl getting a lot of attention these days is Grace Park, of Battlestar Galactica, after appearing in a spread in Maxim.
There has been a human rights movement trying to prevent Japan's admission into the UN Security Council Fellow as a permanent member. Hyonchong Kim of the One Korea LA Forum claims that this is a disgrace to all the WWII victim who fell victim to becoming comfort women.
