April 19th 2005: Issue 32
The latest Korean blockbuster to reach the shores of America opens on Wednesday at the Film Forum. Okay, well it wasn't a blockbuster in the traditional sense with millions in ticket sales, but Save the Green Planet, is definitely a blockbuster in its own right, taking risks in plot and genre-blending that is helping the cause for people to call Korean cinema the New Hong Kong for films. Read our own review of the film that Film Comment claims is "as idea-rich as any five films this year".
And if that doesn't convince you enough to go and see the movie, Koreanxchange is letting you see it for free! Well, at least 6 of you. We're giving away 3 pairs of tickets so you can decide for yourself (but we're sure you will agree with us anyway). The first 3 people to email kxmailer@koreanx.net with the answer to this question gets to save him and his date the 20 beans and see it for free: "What are 3 kinds of genres director Jang Jun Hwan tackles in the film?" (Hint: Read our review for the answer to this question)
Say bye to the hordes of Koreans getting radish-leg elimination plastic surgery! The 2005 Korea Big Women Fashion Show held in Seoul Samseong-dong on April 9th was planned by feminist event planners and designers of "big" clothes. Models hoping to "change the standard of beauty" by participating in the show were supported by family members with words of encouragement like "Dont go out and humiliate the entire family, you pig." Nice.

Superstar Mr. Gam (Shupeoseuta Gam Sa-yong) (2004)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 113 min
Directed by Jong-hyeon Kim
Starring Seo Yun Jin, Su Lee Bom, Yu Gong
In today's "win win win" mentality, this 2004 film about a continual "loser" touched the hearts of Korean audiences. Beom-soo Lee portrays a real-life Korean baseball player, Sa-yong Gam. Gam was the losing pitcher of the 1982 Sammi Superstars, the worst of Korea's original six professional baseball teams. The film was praised for faithfully recreating the culture of the 1980s, when professional baseball was first taking root in Korea. Superstar Mr. Gam (also called Mr. Gam's Victory) was described in the Korean press as "a film full of optimism and hope. The film presents the right combination of sentiment and humor to tell the story of Gam as he fights through the odds to keep his dream alive." (Korea Times) Beom-soo Lee was also praised for his bittersweet performance as Sa-yong Gam.
Ms. Hyun-Ock Im will give a brief introduction before the film and lead a discussion session afterwards. Admission is free for this non-ticketed event. The film is in Korean with English subtitles.

SCREENING
Wet Sand: Voices From LA
Wet Sand: Voices From LA (2003)
USA, 59 minutes, video, color, English, Spanish and Korean with English subtitles
Directed by: Dai Sil Kim-Gibson
Documentary
Wet Sand, in exploring the aftermath of the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest, presents lives forever transformed by it and lays bare deeply rooted flaws of American society. The film captures the resiliency of the communities struggling to prevent "the fire next time" and fighting for the "unrealized hope, America." Mrs. Jung Hui Lee who lost her only son during the upheaval says, "Unity is like holding wet sand tightly in your hand. If you hold a fistful of wet sand, it becomes one big lump. But if the sand dries, it will slip out through your fingers until there is nothing left."
Dai Sil Kim-Gibson, who made Sa-I-Gu (April 29), about the 1992 Los Angeles Civil Unrest and one of few films about one of the largest urban upheavals in American history, kept in touch with her interviewees, learning that the voices of victims have been largely silenced and people moved on believing that things were getting better. Roughly a decade after that tragic event, she listens to the victims' voices again.
"The best film by far I've ever seen about the 1992 riots. It was emotional, analytical, provocative, educational, and balanced. [Wet Sand] did what no one else has done, which is to see the tragedy of the riots from the different perspectives of the various communities in South Los Angeles. The images worked. Telling the stories in three languages worked. The sub-titles worked. Everything worked! Everyone should see it." - Lou Cannon, Author of Official Negligence (How Rodney King and the Riots Changed Los Angeles and the LAPD), and former Los Angeles Bureau Chief for the Washington Post at the time of the Los Angeles upheaval
