May 11th 2006: Issue 51
Happy Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month! The month designated by the United States to "honor and celebrate the millions of Asian/Pacific Americans whose contributions have helped make America a strong, vibrant, and free society" ironically started off with the May 1st Immigrant rally and "A Day Without Immigrants." But aside from the civil rights mobilization events involving millions of people and 200 cities, May is filled with tons of events and programs in New York City celebrating our heritage on a rwide ange of outlets from radio to television to theater. Last weekend in Queens, The Queens Theater hosted the first-ever Asian Cultural Festival filled with cultural performances from music and film to dance and theater while Manhattan hosted the 27th Annual APA Heritage Festival. So take a look and see if something peaks your interest--theres more to "cultural events" than poongmool performances and fan dances.
Hallyu item of the moment: Time's latest issue, featuring the "Time 100: The People Who Shape Our World" spotlights a little-known (in America at least) singer named Bi ("Rain" to you Americans).

TELEVISION BROADCASTS
WNET Thirteen Presents Due East
As the public television station for the New York metropolitan area, Thirteen serves one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse regions in the nation. This month, Due East, the station's annual celebration of Asian Pacific American heritage, presents a range of programming that focuses on everything from history and activism to music and dance. Due East runs from Friday, May 5th through Tuesday, May 30th, on Thirteen. One highlight of the festival, presented by public television's award-winning Independent Lens series on Tuesday, May 9th at 10:00pm, is a pair of narrative films about being outside the mainstream of the dominant American culture. Fishbowl follows an 11-year-old Hawaiian girl as she tries to be anything but herself. American Made confronts issues of tradition, faith, conformity and sacrifice when a Sikh-American family is stranded in the desert on their way to the Grand Canyon. Another premiere is Spotlighting: The Sun Spots, Wednesday, May 10th at 10:30pm, a documentary on The Sun Spots, a veteran music and comedy lounge act, from their beginnings as teens in the Philippines in the 1960s to their most recent gig as the house band at Las Vegas' Plaza Hotel.
On Tuesday, May 9th at 12:30 - 2:30am Thirteen will show an encore of Arirang: The Korean-American Journey/the Korean-American Dream - This two part documentary begins in the early 1900s when more than 7,000 Koreans left their strife-torn homeland for new lives on the sugar plantations of Hawaii. As American settlers, the Korean sojourners organized around the cause of independence for Korea while simultaneously sinking roots deep into their new home. As they achieved astonishing success in American terms, they kept the idea of an independent Korea alive throughout Japan's half-century occupation of the Korean peninsula. The story continues with the dramatic renewal of migration as a result of the Korean War, and subsequent changes in U.S. immigration law. After 1970, the Korean-American population expanded rapidly to over one million today. This is a story about distances: from Seoul to New Jersey, from storekeeper to Harvard graduate, from the devastating Los Angeles riots of 1992 to a heightened involvement in the American scene.

Asian Contemporary Art Week is an annual, city-wide event focusing attention on the richness and diversity of Asian and Asian American contemporary art in New York through programs such as exhibitions, gallery receptions, lectures, performances and studio visits. Asian contemporary art was once the domain of a small group of curators and collectors who would frequent exhibitions at venues mostly dedicated to Asian art, convinced that the best of contemporary Asian art was as innovative, dynamic, and powerful as work being produced anywhere in the world. From a desire to increase the visibility of these artists and works, and to invite broader comparisons and dialogue, Asian Contemporary Art Week was established by the Asian Contemporary Art Consortium, a broad alliance of curators, gallerists, and collectors who hoped to share their enthusiasm with a wider circle of friends. There are a total of twenty-eight participants this year. Through this collaborative effort, we are able to show Asian art in New York at its best.
This year¡¯s event focuses on video art. This focus recognizes that Asian artists are at the forefront of new media art. Asian Contemporary Art Week is part of a wider phenomenon, one that presents, appreciates, and assesses the work of contemporary Asian and Asian-American artists within the context of the international contemporary art scene. Given how much the contemporary Asian art world has changed in four years, we expect Asian Contemporary Art Week will continue to evolve and grow.

Although we are a group of culturally disparate people tied together by geographic location, we all face the same major challenge in corporate America. The prevailing question is "What does it take for Asian Americans to get to the next level?" It is a question best answered by the individuals who have taken many steps forward in their careers for their betterment and for ours. In commemoration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, yKAN and PricewaterhouseCoopers would like to invite you to our Asian American Leadership Forum - Breaking the Asian American Glass Ceiling. Following the reception and introduction, forum participants will break out into three roundtable groups to discuss Asian American-specific strategies for climbing the corporate ladder and other current issues relevant to Asian American professionals.
