May 13th 2004: Issue 09
If you missed the past forum on Presidential election and the concerns of the Korean American community, be sure to attend this Thursday's. Also, last month's Kor-ting speed dating event was pretty successful. Ahnline, a Korean dating service, will hosting one as well. This one, however, will look to be more organized--they will have separate areas for people who are there to mingle and those who are there to speed date.
The first of the year's 3 biggest Asian film festivals is coming in June—Subway Cinema's Asian Film Festival, which focuses on mainly feature films released in theaters abroad rather than indie flicks. One film featured at the festival that I've been waiting to see is Jet Li's Hero.
And if you haven't heard already, May is Asian Pacific American month. There are always a lot of interesting things happening this month to celebrate. Some background history on Asian Pacific American Month: President Jimmy Carter signed a joint resolution declaring May 4th - 10th, 1979, as the first Asian Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, President George H. W. Bush expanded the celebration to the entire month. Public Law 102-450, approved on October 23, 1992, designated May of each year as National Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen for the observance to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in May 1843. "Asian Pacific American" is a political appellation that encompasses many ethnic groups with diverse backgrounds, histories, languages, and cultures. The term attempts to give expression to cultural, linguistic, and ethnic diversity while recognizing common historical experiences in American history. Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates the collective accomplishments of these communities.

Korean artist Kyung Jeon will be showcasing her work "Chang-nan Minor" from May 13 - June 19th at gallery called The Proposition. Kyung Jeon's first solo exhibition of paintings and drawings on rice paper, titled Chang-nan Minor, offers an idiosyncratic glimpse into the delicate nature of identity, sexuality, and personal politics. Jeon's gracefully rendered works meld elements of her rich and storied heritage into a darkly humorous and endlessly inventive narrative, the content of which unfolds through a cast of mildly sadistic and largely female characters forever vacillating bewteen adult and child, woman and girl.
Korean for "mischief," chang-nan is used to refer to children when they are misbehaving, and with a cleverness and deftness that is characteristic of Jeon's poetic sensibility, she turns the roles of adult and child upside down, frequently depicting women doing things girls would do, and little girls often doing things only grown women would do. Such inversions/subversions form the core of Jeon's creative explorations and point to a fundamental notion of metaphoric conflict that runs throughout her work.
Having experienced the devastating effects the Korean War had on her family, Jeon is no stranger to internal turmoil, and that too is echoed in her work by subtle and pervasive feelings of sadness and entrapment. However, the melancholy that drifts through her work is balanced out by an undeniable humor and lightness, and where lesser artists would simply sink into the troublesome pitfalls of self-conscious sentimentality, Jeon boldly confronts
the complexities of her past by giving voice to an array of complex emotions and feelings ranging from humor to sadness, from vulnerability to anger, and from sexuality to sensuality; as if to say that it's the multiple paths and practices we follow that make us who we are.

Advanced tickets go on sale May 10, 2004! For the third year in a row, Subway Cinema presents its festival (one of only three in the US) devoted to new feature films from Asia. After watching 211 films, Subway Cinema feels they can safely say that this year's line-up includes the hands-down, no-holds-barred best new films from across the region. These are the movies that have been sweeping the awards ceremonies, racking up the box office loot and burning up the film festival circuit ceremonies (their 16 films "with more to come" have won a cumulative 38 awards). No one else will bring them to New York, so they've scraped together their cash and brought them here themselves.
Subway Cinema is a film programming collective, based in New York City, that is committed to increasing exposure and appreciation for popular Asian cinema, which has been traditionally overlooked by mainstream American critics and distributors. This is our third New York Asian Film Festival, and while we don't have $15 million in corporate sponsorship, we do have the best Asian movies in the world, for ten days only.

MUSIC FESTIVAL
First Annual Asian Rock Fest
The face of rock 'n' roll is changing. What started out as a random James Iha sighting or hearing secondhand about the last Cibo Matto concert has grown into something larger. On May 22, 2004 the integration of Asian musicians into rock 'n' roll will manifest itself in the form of the First Annual Asian Rock Fest. The most ambitious festival of its kind will cover 8 hours, bringing together 8 bands from all along the East Coast. The New York City venue Piano's will host the event, featuring both up-and-coming and firmly established acts. The line-up includes: Eyes Like Knives, Carol Bui, Kite Operations, Strangeway, The Infirm Glory Of The Positive Hour, Johnny Hi-Fi, Bastion and Serious Weapon.
In addition to originating the festival, AsianRockFest.com has positioned itself to be the most comprehensive online listing of Asian musicians across all major musical genres. Visit The Armies section of www.AsianRockFest.com to join in making the statement that Asian musicians are an undeniable musical force whose impact is seen and heard more every day.
Asian Rock Fest will present East Coast and West Coast festivals in 2005. Look for multi-day, multi-city showcases in 2006. As the festival grows, so will the prominence of the headlining acts, including major artists from Asia in 2007. Help us spread the word to make all these goals possible.
