June 7th 2006: Issue 53

The 2006 World Cup is only 2 days away! Judging from the excitement caused by Korea's run to the quarterfinals in 2002, you'd expect there to be a lot of buzz surrounding what sort of events are planned for this year's Cup. If you were in New York to watch the tournament in 2002, you'd probably remember the mobs of people up at 7:00am at Blue and 5:00am at Empire Korea during their Cinderella run. In the wake of their victory over Mexico, 32nd Street at dawn was overrun by a sea of red, and restaurants were giving away free meals! However, from where I looked, nobody seemed to know what was happening this year. So to fix that, I've prepared an (Un)official World Cup Team Korea Viewing Guide for New Yorkers. Korea's first match is next Tuesday the 13th, so put in that day off request today!

Aside from the World Cup (what else is there, really?), there's a bunch of items of interest regarding Asian film. As for Hollywood, Asian American and Better Luck Tommorrow director Justin Lin has his third installment of The Fast and the Furious being released. For independent films, official Sundance selection The Motel by Korean-American director Mike Kang gets its theatrical release at the Film Forum. Also, South Korean blockbuster Typhoon, grossing $13 million in its premiere last weekend, continues its run in New York. Read our review here.

The start of June also brings outdoor concert and event season. In Manhattan, Central Park hosts its annual Central Park SummerStage, a mostly-free program featuring eclectic and independent music, while the piers along the river hosts the annual River to River Festival. And if you're in Brooklyn (Koreans live there?), check out Celebrate Brooklyn, a series of free shows at the Prospect Park.

Since this year's tournament is in Germany (those bastards who ousted the Koreans in the semifinals in 2002), which is 6 hours ahead of New York, all of the games will be televised during not-so-primetime hours of the day. So clear your work schedule and make your calls to reserve a spot at one of these places. They will get packed, even if you think no one will be there to watch a 9:00am game. And if you want to watch it outside of Koreatown, you may want to try ESPNZone 212) 921 - 3776 in Times Square or Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden 718) 274 - 4925 in Astoria among many other options. Jerseys and Gear

This year's Korean national team jerseys are officially made by Nike. The only place in New York City that still had a lot of jerseys left was Macy's 212) 695 - 4400. As of last week, they had 10 or so jerseys and Korean Federation t-shirts, but the jerseys do not have the official lettering / numbers (names on the jerseys are now spelled "Jisung" rather than "J S Park" as in the 2002 World Cup). Modells, Champs, and FootLocker did not even carry them at all. Other stores carrying the non-marked jerseys were Paragon 212) 255 - 8036 and NikeTown 212) 891 - 6453, who both had about 2 - 3 left. Official jerseys with the markings are sold online at Soccer.com, Soccer Plus, Kitbag (London), Subside Sports (London), and SoccerInside.com (Korea).

PANEL DISCUSSION
The Engineer and the Busboy: Immigration, Jobs and the Global Economy

The Asia Society, The Immigration Policy Center, Korean American Community Foundation (KACF)

8:30 - 9:00pm Reception

New York City

The current controversy over immigration in the U.S. has sparked a passionate debate, raising many legitimate questions. While much of the focus has been on Latino immigrants seeking low-skilled jobs, high-skilled workers from all over the world, including Asia, are also facing difficulties entering this country. How is this impacting the U.S. economy, and in turn the global economy? What are the effects of U.S. immigration policy on migrant-sending countries like India, China, Korea and the Philippines, who have over the years sent hundreds of thousands of educated, high-skilled workers to America? Whom should America let in, and under what conditions? How can the U.S. government strike a balance in its policy between high-skilled and low-skilled immigrants? What impact will U.S. workers and businesses feel? Join our panel of experts for a thoughtful debate of these issues and more.

Speakers:

  • Vernon Briggs, Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations, Cornell University
  • Michele Wucker, Author, Lockout: Why America Keeps Getting Immigration Wrong When Our Prosperity Depends on Getting it Right
  • Dan Siciliano, Lecturer in Law and Executive Director, Stanford Program in Law, Economics & Business, Stanford University
  • Peter Salins, Senior Fellow, Center for Civic Innovation, Manhattan Institute; Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, State University of New York (moderator)

Gallery Korea presents three mid-career Korean American artists, Jung Hyang Kim, Sung Ho Choi and Mikyung Kim. Although the three artists employ quite diverse forms of expressions, they are united by their common Korean heritage and their reflections on a shared American experience. Somehow their explorations reveal the subtle harmonies of the juncture of these two cultures. Individually the artists maintain their own authentic voices, yet together they are mediators of a more universal blend of thoughts and expressions. This thematic unification is evidenced both by their formal uses of repetition, dualism, and ritual, which together, forms an incorporation of natural processes presented in a spiritual context

Embodying the dramatic power and elegant sensuality of Korean Dance, Myung Soo Kim, whose recent New York shows caused a critical sensation, will present Arirang: Korean Ritual Solos. The South Korean native performs a series of mesmerizing shamanic dances, drawing on her own emotional experiences living within the political turmoil of North and South Korea. The rich colors of Kim's multi-layered costumes and Korean ritual music complement her lush movement. Kim's solo performance is made up of seven Korean dances: Nabich'um, Pujongnori, Tosalp'uri, Kommu, Sungmu, T'aep'youngmu and Salp'urich'um. These dances are tied together with the theme of Arirang.

Having studied with masters of Korea's ancient dance rituals, Myung Soo Kim's performance is, according to Claudia La Rocco of the New York Times, "mesmerizing, her careful movements hinting at great powers struggling to be unleashed." Selected as the Best Surprise in Dance of 2005 by Robert Johnson of the Star-Ledger, Kim blends this rich artistic legacy and contemporary influences to create an evening of captivating cultural exchange.

    Directed by Justin Lin
Starring Lucas Black, Bow Wow, Sung Kang

Shaun Boswell, who has always been an outsider. A loner at school, his only connection to the indifferent world around him is through illegal street racing -- which has made him particularly unpopular with the local authorities. To avoid jail time, Shaun is sent out of the country to live with his uncle in the military, in a cramped apartment in a low-rent section of Tokyo. In the land that gave birth to the majority of modified racers on the road, the simple street race has been replaced by the ultimate pedal-to-the-metal, gravity-defying automotive challenge ... drift racing, a deadly combination of brutal speed on heart stopping courses of hairpin turns and switchbacks. For his first unsuccessful foray in drift racing, Shaun unknowingly takes on D.K., the "Drift King," with ties to the Yakuza, the Japanese crime machine. The only way he can pay off the debt of his loss is to venture into the deadly realm of the Tokyo underworld, where the stakes are life and death.

But Rain has fallen in love with Peter, and is shocked to find that he is the one she has to assassinate to accomplish her father's mission. In confusion she decides to leave Peter and plans to visit him one last time. Meanwhile Jane, the head nurse, has discovered the Colonel's plot and confronts Rain with the evidence of her intended crime. Finally, declaring her love for Peter, Rain swallows the poison herself.
