June 9th 2005: Issue 35
This year at Cannes, hosting arguably the most prominent international film festival, a record 7 Korean films have been selected, which is surprising given that fact that the emerging trend these days is for Korean films to be pre-sold during production. Festival favorites Hong Sang-Soo and Kim Ki-Duk (who has a pretty humorous interview in this month's KoreAm Journal) have selections. Other directors with selections include Kim Ji-Won, Korean National University of Arts film student Shin Min-Young, and Im Sang-Soo with his politically controversial The President's Last Bang (for its use of documentary footage about the assassination of Korean president Park Chung-hee in 1979). And finally, Chinese coproduction Grain in the Ear, by Zhang Lu, and Ryoo Seung-Wan's Crying Fist starring Choi Min-Shik of Oldboy fame, both landed sidebar awards.
Speaking of Crying Fist, you will get a chance to see it when the New York Asian Film Festival comes to town on June 17th - July 2nd. Some other Korean films of note include Marathon (also known as Running Boy), the biggest box office hit in Korea this year (it's already made more money than Oldboy and JSA put together), and Green Chair, an award-winning movie which according to Subway Cinema is "about underage sex (of the older woman / younger man variety)" from director ( interview) of the very strange movie 301/302. Koreanxchange is giving away 2 pairs of free tickets to either screening of the Korean film A Family, to the 6th and 7th people who can answer this question: "Where does the younger brother of the main character of A Family, think she has gone for the past 3 years?" (hint: answer is on the Subway Cinema website).
Lastly, I'll be celebrating my birthday tommorrow (the 10th) at Light, located at 125 East 54th Street. We'll have the whole place. So come by and have a drink with your favorite Korean events bulletin editor.

SCREENING
Seoul Train
Seoul Train (2004)
USA, Korean, Mandarin, English and Polish with English subtitles, documentary, color, 54min
Directed by Jim Butterworth, Aaron Lubarsky and Lisa Sleeth
Seoul Train provides an unprecedented glimpse into the little known "underground railroad" working to help North Korean refugees escape one of the world's most repressive governments. Today, somewhere between 30,000 and 300,000 North Korean refugees are living in China, having escaped political repression and widespread hunger at home. The Chinese government categorically labels them as illegal migrants and periodically arrests and returns them to North Korea, violating its international obligation to protect and shelter them. Those forcibly returned often face grave human rights abuses including torture, long prison terms, and even execution. For a lucky few, however, there is hope. Via a network of safe houses and escape routes, a group of activists has taken it upon themselves to help the refugees, assisting them on a daring escape to freedom over hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of miles of Chinese territory. It's an epic tale involving North Korean and Chinese agents, courage and deceit, covert border crossings, and the terror of what happens if they get caught. Seoul Train exposes this growing and potentially explosive humanitarian crisis. Filmmakers present at all screenings.

The Busan Port Authority (BPA), Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Association (BJFEZA) and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) invite internationally-focused investors, executives, financial and service professionals, journalists and other interested individuals to attend the first Busan North American Investment Forum. This meeting will be held without charge and admission will be granted on a space available basis, with preference given to investors and executives who are active in the transportation, logistics, distribution, technology and manufacturing industries. Advance registration is encouraged and advised.
Strategically located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula, Busan is the second largest city in Korea. It is a thriving metropolitan center, with approximately 3.7 million inhabitants. Busans deep harbor and gentle tides have transformed it into the largest port in the country handling 80% of total Korean container volume -- and the third largest transshipment container facility in the world. The creation of the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone in March 2004 a 25,000 acre complex that includes Busan New Port, the Busan Science and Industrial Park and a range of other facilities now offers foreign corporations and investors a range of tax and other incentives, further accentuating Busans attractiveness as a business and investment destination.
The Busan delegation is visiting New York within a more decentralized environment in which Korean cities and provinces are moving to develop their competitive advantages and to reach out directly to targeted companies and investors, stated Mr. Woo-won Lee, Managing Director of the Korea International Trade Association. This event is designed to provide participants with an overview of the Korean economy and to allow for one-on-one meetings with prominent business and government leaders from Busan, Koreas leading transportation, shipping, logistics and industrial center.

Woman is the Future of Man (Yeojaneun Namjaui Miraeda) (2004)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 88min
Directed by Hong Sang-Soo
Starring Lee Mun-ho, Kim Hyeon-gon, Park Seon-hwa,and Ho-jung Kim Park Bo-yeong
Like his 2002 film Turning Gate, avant-pop Korean director Hong Sang-Soo's latest film is a deadpan erotic comedy both blunt and elliptical. A pair of thirtysomething urban intellectuals go off in search of the woman that each loved and lost. Hong is good on postcoital tristesse and caustic in representing male stupidity.
