July 12th 2005: Issue 37

The hot humid New York City summer weather is in full swing (how can anyone stand the monotony of invariable climate cities like LA?), and that only means one thing: limitless events from the social to the political to the cultural. These newsletters are by no means meant to be comprehensive--just more of a suggestion of what I think you may be interested in. So take advantage of those summer hours and get out and explore! Special thanks to Rachel Van Kirk Wright from the Korean Culture Service (always a staple in screenings, exhibitions, and installations by Koreans and Korean Americans) for providing her list of events happening in the next couple months.

Koreans all over the country are making news. LA Dodgers slugger Hee-Seop Choi became the first Korean to participate in the Major League Baseball's Home Run Derby (but hit only 5). 12 year-old Japanese / Korean child prodigy Sho Yano from Portland, graduated from Loyola University and became the youngest student ever accepted by the University of Chicago Medical School. (And you thought going to medical school was a big deal for your parents--now they are going to compare you to him)

Grain In Ear, the Chinese-Korean co-production by Chinese-Korean Zhang Lu, was presented with the grand prize at the 2005 Pesaro Film Festival. The Italian film festival, now in its 41st year, dedicated a large portion of its programming to South Korean cinema, including a complete retrospective of Korean director Jang Sun-woo, director of the controversial Lies. Locally, you may have noticed a camera crew at some of the parties over the last year. The shooting was for a film about the New York Asian scene. Documentary filmmakers Steven Hahn & Francis Hsueh present a Work-in-Progress screening of their movie Party on Wednesday, July 20th in connection with the AAIFF. Party is an exploration of the Asian-American party scene that exists for "young professionals" in New York and grapples with why the scene exists and what it says about being Asian-American.

Happy Family (2004)
Germany, Korean with English subtitles, color, Documentary, 67min
Directed by Heesook Sohn
Starring Sohn Yonghyun, Chung Byoungsoon, Kim Haewon, and Harrigan Hynsook

Part of the Asian International Film Festival. U.S. Premiere. Heesook Sohn has settled in Berlin with her German boyfriend and their dog, Lucky. The future seems promising. Nevertheless, there is a nagging emptiness inside her. She feels cut off from her roots ?her family members are scattered across the world and she misses the strong sense of family that she had as a child. Happy FamilyY is a chronicle of her journey to uncover her family history ?a quest that takes her to Los Angeles, Brooklyn and Seoul. As she tracks down her family members, she must confront the circumstances of her parents' divorce that ultimately split them apart. When her father decided to immigrate to America with Sohn and her younger sibling, he not only said goodbye to a failing business and marriage, but left his two oldest children with his ex-wife back in Korea. When Sohn goes back to Korea, she learns how very different her life in America was from her family members that stayed behind ?a situation that has created a rift that goes beyond geography.

Sohn attempts to gather her whole family together to recreate an old black and white photo seen throughout the film. The photo documents the last time her entire family was together in one place. A deeply affecting film, Sohn creates a valuable document of the sacrifices and pain that so often accompanies the Asian diaspora. And her journey, like that of so many others, while often sad, is in the end not without hope.

White Box is pleased to present Eight Korean Artists: The AHL Foundation Visual Arts Award Winners 2004 & 2005, an exhibition highlighting the works of eight Korean artists living & working in the United States. The artists chosen for this exhibition were selected by the AHL Foundation, an organization formed in 2003 to promote the work of Korean artists in the West and to help create a context for their work in today's competitive contemporary art world. The AHL Foundation initiated their annual awards for Korean artists in the United States in 2004, granting the winners a monetary award, a chance to exhibit their work and a catalogue to accompany the exhibition. In 2004 the awards focused on younger artists while the 2005 awards, by contrast, were open to a cross-generational group of Korean artists. Jurors were asked to choose the work they considered to have the most merit and deserve to be taken into account by the larger arts communities.

JOB OPENING
Program Associate (Full Time)

Young Korean American Service and Education Center (YKASEC)
www.ykasec.org | ysm@ykasec.org

For the past 20 years, YKASEC - Empowering the Korean American Community (YKASEC) have provided the Korean and Asian communities in New York City with much-needed free legal services in a wide range of areas. YKASEC's efforts have reached hundreds of individuals each year. In today's atmosphere, immigrants - particularly limited-English-proficient immigrants - face a serious shortage of legal services precisely when such services are most needed. This is particularly true for the roughly 200,000 Korean community residents of New York City. The majority are limited-English-proficient (LEP) immigrants, and a significant number are non-citizens who live in poverty. Many Korean Americans are victims of racial and language discrimination, exploitation, and have suffered under restrictive immigration legislation and rising anti-immigrant sentiment. The result has been a striking increase in the community's need for legal services, in areas ranging from employment to housing to immigration. However, this need remains unmet, as there are no other Korean organizations providing legal services in the City. Understanding these issues, YKASEC's Program Associate will be leading efforts in coordinating legal programs to address problems and barriers faced by the Korean American community.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Executive Director in implementing the above programs
  • Coordinate free legal clinics and legal service program
  • Hold regular local legal clinics to do intake for immigrant problems
  • Perform intake outside of clinics and refer to attorneys
  • Handle cases and provide assistance not appropriate for attorneys
  • Organize and conduct trainings with attorneys about legal rights
  • Coordinate organizing activities
  • Engage in targeted advocacy and coalitional campaigns to address program issues

    Salary
$28K to $32K plus fringe benefits
