Tonight is the start of the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF). Not to be confused with the recent New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which is better known for premiering Asian feature blockbusters, AAIFF, now in its 30th year, was the nation's first festival dedicated to screening works by media artists of Asian descent. Opening the festival is Too Fast Too Furious director Justin Lin's new mockumentary Finishing the Game. Every year, it is probably the best arena for checking out the who's next talent of the Asian American indie film scene. One reason I am especially excited this year is because they will be screening my first short Within Limits tommorrow as part of the "You Are Not Your Khakis" Shorts Program! Yay!
And with the film festival going on for the next week, Asian America's brightest directors and actors will be in town to revel in the festivities. So this Saturday, I am helping to promote a charity fundraiser for the Museum of Chinese in Americas (MoCA), hosted by actors Sung Kang (Too Fast Too Furious III, The Motel), and Roger Fan (Annapolis, Better Luck Tommorrow) in conjunction with Elements Nightlife at Jade Terrace. It's one of the city's only outdoor clubs and Saturday night's forecast is clear in the 70s. In addition, there special guests including AngryAsianman's Phil Yu and Undoing director Chris Chan Lee, as well as tentative appearances by director Justin Lin (Too Fast Too Furious III, Annapolis) and Leonardo Nam (American Pastime, Too Fast Too Furious III) all on hand to benefit an exciting project called the Chinatown Film Project. See below for details and guestlist info. Hope to see you guys there!

Starring Seong Hyeon-a, Ha Jung-woo, Park Ji-Yeon
Prolific author, controversial Korean filmmaker, and inventive artist Kim Ki-duk (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring) returns to the screen with a story of undying love and plastic surgery. Pretty but unstable She-hee (Park Ji-yun) has been with her boyfriend, Ji-woo (Ha Jung-woo) for over two years but their relationship seems to be losing steam. When Ji-woo starts thinking of other women She-hee can't take it and retreats to a plastic-surgery clinic. Ji-woo is left lonely and clueless as to her whereabouts. It is not until months later, after the scars have healed, that She-hee returns. This time as See-hee, a new waitress at a coffeehouse that Ji-woo frequents. She fails to seduce him, mostly because he still longs for his missing girlfriend, leaving See-hee jealous of her old self and unsure how to win his love back.
"Simply put, Time is about the eternal war between infatuation and familiarity, and our irreconcilable need to find both in the same person."

White Wave celebrates Ms. Young Soon Kim's 30th Anniversary of dance in NY with the world premiere of Ssoot. The evening's performance is choreographed by Kim, and features an original score by renowned Korean composers Ki Young Kim and Dae Soo Hahn. Ssoot takes its name from a Korean word, which literally translates as charcoal in English but is also used colloquially to mean "fresh energy." This three-part 90-minute piece opens with a delirious, highly exposed portrayal of visually provocative and personally intimate movement. Ssoot seeks to reveal the emotional landscape and inner lives of its characters in their most raw and vulnerable form. Asian Artworks Inc. is delighted to partner with White Wave in support of The Company, modern dance, and the visual arts.
White Wave Young Soon Kim Dance Company and Asian Artworks, Inc. are also proud to present a Ssoot benefit silent auction on July 25 at Dancer Theater Workshop. The auction joins in the celebration of Young Soon Kim's 30th Anniversary Season, supports Ssoot, and the great artworks of forty artists will be auctioned off during the Ssoot premiere.
Gala Reception / Silence Auction: Black-tie optional, champagne reception with fundraising on-site auction in the Dance Theater Workshop lobby, continues during intermission, and concludes just after the performance. The auction will continue online until the last performance of Ssoot at DTW on July 28th.

Death is an aspect of the human condition that touches every culture in every age, and almost all cultures envelop death in a rich artistry as a way of managing the trauma it causes. In nineteenth and early twentieth century Korea, artisans carved joyful wooden figurines depicting acrobats, clowns and mystical animals-which are called kkoktu-to place on the funeral biers of the departed. A collection of 72 kkoktu will be brought to the U.S., for the first time ever, for an exhibition in The Korea Society Gallery. Organized jointly with the Seoul-based Ockrang Cultural Foundation, Korean Funerary Figures: Companions for the Journey to the Other World will run at The Korea Society Gallery from July 26 to November 20, 2007.
The kkoktu are archaeological treasures in their own right. Their costumes and poses reflect the realities of rural Korean village life during a period that left few written records. More importantly, the kkoktu open a window on a timeless, characteristically Korean attitude towards death. Though the gaiety depicted in many of the figurines may seem incompatible with mourning, what they are intended to express is a deep desire that the deceased loved one will enter the next world surrounded by joy. The figurines also embody a sophisticated appreciation of the fleeting nature of all experience.
The show's opening reception will be held on July 26 at 5:30 PM at The Korea Society Gallery. To provide a cultural context for the exhibition, immediately following the reception, Dr. Laurel Kendall of the American Museum of Natural History will give a Gallery Talk on the shamanic rituals for the dead beginning at 6:30 PM. Besides the two Gallery Talk Programs to attend, a 266-page full color catalog of the exhibition will be available for purchase. catalog "Journey to the Grave, Dance to Paradise: Shamanic Rituals for the Dead" with Laurel Kendall of the American Museum of Natural History.

FESTIVAL
New Sounds in Chinatown: Soundfest
In this inaugural year, Soundfest, AAAA's first outdoor music showcase in Chinatown featuring a talent-packed roster of local Asian American performers, will be hosted by spoken word artist Kelly Tsai and feature performances by Abstract Vision, Bora Yoon, Chinese Music Ensemble, Falu, Happyfunsmile, Indo Pak Coalition, The Jack Lords, Koba & DJ Boo, Slanty Eyed Mama and Stone Forest Ensemble.
This marks the first music fest in Chinatown since the events of 9/11 and it is one of the many symbols of rebirth and rejuvenation in that community since the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. Chinatown's Columbus Park has undergone a multi-million dollar renovation and become a lively hub for various arts and cultural activities. Soundfest aims to put both Chinatown and these Asian American musicians on the cultural map for audiences from all parts of this city. The genre of music spans the widest range imaginable, reflecting the diversity of the Asian American community itself--from hip hop to bollywod to jazz to alternative to traditional, and will touch on everything from politics to identity.
