July 22nd 2005: Issue 38

North Korea is finally making news outside of the nuclear weapons arena. "Empress Chung," a cartoon based on the traditional Korean tale of a young princess who sacrifices herself to save her father's eyesight, will get its official launch simultaneously in North and South Korea, a first for the two countries. The South will show it on 60 screens and the North 6, on August 15th, Korea's Liberation Day -- which celebrates Korea gaining independence from Japan in 1945. Nelson Shin, a U.S. citizen, personally financed the $6.5 million film.

Over the next couple of weeks, there are a few opportunities in media for Koreans here in New York as well. The Fast and Furious series is making a casting call open to any ethnicity for the 3rd installment, directed by fellow Asian American Justin Lin, of the acclaimed Better Luck Tommorrow. In addition, a friend of mine at CNN is planning on doing a story on young Asian American women who elect to get the eyelid surgery. I know, I know, most of the people who read this are probably on their 2nd double eyelid surgery and moving on to the nose job by now, but if you know anyone who is considering plastic surgery please see the entry below. I'm sure all of us know somebody who is considering it. So go out there and make yourself famous already!

Memories of Murder (Salinui chueok) (2003)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 130min
Directed by Bong Joon-ho
Starring Song Kang-ho, Kim Sang-kyung, Kim Roe-ha, Song Jae-ho, and Byeon Hie-bong

Based on the horrifying murders which shocked South Korea between 1986 and 1991, Memories of Murder follows the investigation of two rural cops; Officer Park (Song Kang-ho) and Officer Jo (Kim Roe-ha). This pair of unorthodox cops are having little success with their investigations and a top detective from Seoul (Kim Sang-kyung) is bought into bring his more sophisticated techniques to the case.

Park and Jo are understandably unhappy with this turn of events but, as the killer continue to strike, this trio must put aside their petty differences to solve the case. This stunning debut feature from writer/director Bong Joon-ho focuses on the police investigation and the mounting panic that took hold of the surrounding community. But carefully balanced against the grisly details of the investigation is a series of hilariously comic scenes (Park's desperate attempt to preserve a crime scene early on or his investigation at the swimming bath are particular highlights) which makes this one of the funniest films of the year. Amazingly, Bong manages to integrate these sequences into the plot without disrupting the dark tone or atmosphere which he has carefully developed elsewhere.

CASTING CALL
Asian / Asian American Actors Needed for Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo

Tapes should be received no later than July 29th
www.finnhiller.com | fastandfurious3@gmail.com

Apparently, they are looking to cast the lead roles "color blind" - which is a first. How cool would it be if all of our actors and actresses flooded the casting directors with tapes and head shots - and how even more important would it be if our actors and actresses actually were cast in lead roles? So far, they have not received many submissions - so we want to get the word out to everyone!

Here's your opportunity to submit yourself for a lead role in the upcoming Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo - directed by Asian American director Justin Lin (of Better Luck Tomorrow. While the male roles are open to all ethnicity, we have an opportunity for all Asian American actors to submit themselves for these potentially break out roles--they need to see more Asian American actors and are willing to cast the right person regardless of race. Click on www.finnhiller.com to submit your application.

Finn Hiller Casting (Crash, Coach Carter) is seeking male actors of any ethnicity for the lead and Japanese female actresses in the Universal Pictures feature film, Fast and Furious 3: Tokyo. Both must be able to play high school roles, to begin filming in Tokyo and Los Angeles on September 12th. The film is about an obsessive street racer named SHAUN who is exiled to Tokyo after annoying the local police once too often.

SHAUN is treated like an outsider and mocked for being a gai-jin, He is drawn to the subculture of drift racing, a dangerous and sometimes deadly sport that he masters with startling speed. In the process, Shaun makes a deadly enemy and meets the love of his life, Tani.

TANI is a stunning Japanese girl who attends the same school as Shaun in Tokyo. When they interact at first, she dismisses him until she realizes that he is an obsessive street racer as well. Chaos arises when Shaun finds out that she is in fact D.K.'s girlfriend (the "Drift King" of Tokyo). Shaun enrages D.K. by challenging him to a drift race, while at the same time forming a friendship with Tani, which eventually evolves into a forbidden romance.

REEVISE (A.K.A TWINKIE) is a fellow classmate of Shaun, who is the first to befriend him in Tokyo. He too is car-crazy and drives a Nissan S15 Silvia. Initially Shaun is rude to Reevise, claiming "he doesn?t need friends", but soon they develop a friendship as Reevise tutors Shaun on Japanese culture as well drift racing.
