August 2nd 2004: Issue 14

This week, we will be hosting the series of events for the NY Korean Film Festival. The theme of the events, "The Spirit of Korea", will be highlighting the 5 senses of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell with a series of events. That means free food and free drinks and complimentary passes to the festival! See the promo for it below or go to www.koreanx.net/nykff/

By now, everybody probably knows that Nicholas Cage married some LA K-town girl named Alice Kim. The Digital Chosun recently ran an article accompanying that story entitled "What is it about Korean Women that Western Men Like?". However, they probably should have renamed the article to "What's up with the Asian fetish, guys?". And is it me, or do you ever notice whenever somebody writes an article about "Asian culture", they always get the stupidest people who probably never leave their houses for interviews? Kenny, an executive at an LA Koreatown broadcasting company, states "Korean women are submissive and kind. They are known to make breakfast, lunch and dinner for their husbands..." What da!? Thanks Kenny, for enlisting yet another hundred thousand people in the Great Asian Fetish Movement. There are other gems in the article like a quote by fetishist Blake Selesnew: "American women are too materialistic, but Korean women aren't. They seem less snobby". Wonderful!

In other news, the Digital Chosun has also reported that Airline Unions Refuse to Transport Troops to Iraq. What a great way for Korea to privately protest Korea's involvement in the occupation of Iraq. Generation Rice, a great webzine dedicated to celebrate Asians and Asian Americans especially in the arts arena, has posted its last regular issue. It will now only publish sporadically =(

ART
Projects 81: Jean Shin

Now through Mon September 27th (hours)
MoMA Queens
33rd Street and Queens Blvd
Long Island City
$12
MoMA website

Jean Shin has a knack for transforming the mundane into the beautiful. Collecting discarded objects from daily life-- clothes, broken umbrellas, worn-out shoes, out-of-date eyeglasses--she uses a labor-intensive process of dismantling, alteration, and reconstruction to breathe new life into them. This Korean-American artist makes sculptures and installations from items that once embodied a sense of comfort, hope, or, at the very least, practicality. Her materials often retain memories of the human body (worn leather shoes that have molded to someone's feet), the marks of particular events (an umbrella battered by a violent downpour), or note an absence (a lone sock left behind in the clothes dryer). Shin transforms the leftovers of our lives into a visually arresting explosion of form, texture, and color.

Projects 81 responds to a particular moment in the history of The Museum of Modern Art when the institution is in flux. As the Museum's newly constructed and renovated buildings are nearing completion in Manhattan, Shin's project speaks to a sense of optimism and regeneration. At a time when the Museum lies on the threshold of a new phase in its history, it is only fitting that her project for MoMA reworks the old into the new.

    JOB OPPORTUNITY
    Program Associate

    YKASEC
    Yu Soung Mun ysm@ykasec.org | www.ykasec.org

Post 9-11 has been a time of challenges and uncertainties for many immigrant communities across the nation. With policies and aggressive enforcements geared towards immigrants, many are living in fear and have become shadows of every walk in society. Special Registration of Aliens has racially profiled immigrants from certain nations as possible terrorists. The newly created Department of Homeland Security is spending heavy funding and manpower for enforcement purposes when quality of services are causing insurmountable citizenship and visa backlogs. EO34, the City's new confidentiality policy is flawed and does not ensure immigrants from accessing services--police are exempt from the order--key provisions and the order does not prevent disclosure of immigration status information. With continued intimidation towards immigrants in the US coupled with the rising tensions between North Korea and the United States, Korean Americans abroad are susceptible to being targets of the same racial profiling and discrimination that the Muslim, Arab American, and South East Asian communities faced and are still facing. Understanding these issues, YKASEC's Program Associate will be leading efforts in addressing problems and barriers faced by the Korean American community, with the ultimate goal of achieving social change within a global context.

    Responsibilities include:

  • Assist the Executive Director in implementing the above programs
  • Research and analyze immigrant rights issues and policies impacting the Korean American community.
  • Plan effective legislative strategies and advocacy efforts on the local, state, and federal levels on issues of concern to the Korean American and the wider immigrant community.
  • Build strong coalitions with other immigrant rights groups and advocates to further advance the immigrant rights agenda.
  • Lead educating, organizing, and advocacy efforts in our community to increase community empowerment.
  • Conduct fundraising and development initiatives, including grant writing, for our Civic Affairs program area. Must be the point per son for foundations that fund civil rights and immigrant rights work.

    Qualifications
We are seeking applicants with a strong desire to serve the Korean American community. The applicant must have excellent communication skills, especially writing skills, be able to handle several simultaneous tasks, and be extremely organized. Non-profit or other community activism experience strongly preferred. Some proficiency in Korean language is preferred.

    Organization history
YKASEC was established in 1984, to serve the needs and concerns of the Korean American community through our four programming areas of Education, Civic Affairs, Social Services, and Culture. Since our founding, we have made a profound presence in our community through various education, organizing, and advocacy initiatives. YKASEC places special emphasis on meeting the needs of those who are marginalized such as the youth, elderly, limited English proficient persons, low-income residents, and recent immigrants. YKASEC is the New York affiliate of the National Korean American Service & Education Consortium (NAKASEC).
