August 15th 2007: Issue 74

Summer is winding down, which means the last of the big Asian film festivals hits New York, the 7th Annual New York Korean Film Festival. This year's lineup looks especially good with festival favorites Dirty Carnival and You Are My Sunshine (the movie that also made Jeon Do-yeon earlier this year the only Korean best actress winner at Cannes). If more mainstream flicks is your cup of tea, theres plenty to choose from including last years #2 and #3 box office blockbusters, Tazza: The High Rollers and 200 Pound Beauty. Also, get a chance to see Im Kwon Taek's Romeo-and-Juliet-esque pansori tale, Chunhyang, on the big screen in a retrospective of the master-director.

Other films to look out for coming to U.S. shores in years to come include Korea / China / U.S. coproductions such as Laundry Warrior starring Korean megastar and all-around Asian heartthrob Jang Dong-kun and Crouching Tiger Zhang Ziyi. In the movie, produced by producer of the Matrix, Jang is killer who went to the U.S from China only to confront a female killer, Zhang, who is pursuing him. Also, actor Jang Hyuk will co-star in the Hollywood Dance of the Dragon with Singaporean actress Fann Wong, while on the other side of the Pacific, Lost girl Kim Yun-jin made her return to the Korean film industry in Seven Days

Happy Rest of the Summer!
