August 22nd 2005: Issue 40

Park Chan-wook's Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, the third part of his so-called "Vengeance Trilogy" that also includes Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (Now playing at the Angelika) and Old Boy (2003), enjoyed an explosive opening in its first weekend in South Korea, breaking the Thursday - Sunday record set by Tae Guk Gi in 2004. The story of a woman named Geum-ja, played by popular actress Lee Young-ae, who seeks revenge on a man who wronged her after she is released from prison, will also screen in competition at the Venice Film Festival in early September. In addition, a select few theaters equipped with DLP (Digital Light Processing) digital projectors will screen an alternative version which experiments with color and black-and-white imagery.

Rain sighting in the US! After completing the MTV Asia "Grand Slam" by picking up best Korean artist honors at the MTV Asia Awards (Jan), MTV Video Music Awards Japan (May), and CCTV-MTV Mandarin Music Honors (July), Rain (Bi) and his producer Park Jin-Young (JYP) have been invited to attend the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami. Speaking of Miami, Gong Li, currently on the set of Miami Vice, is set to reteam with co-star Chow Yun-Fat, who is finishing up work on Pirates of the Caribbean 2, (stars of Raise the Red Lantern and Ju Dou) for upcoming Autumn Remembrance, a historical drama to be directed by Zhang Yimou, best known in the U.S. for House of Flying Daggers.

Feel like you've had too much American propoganda today? Need some more North Korean influence in your diet? A California man has cataloged North Korea's rhetoric, in a site devoted to satirizing official news agency's over-the-top writing.

With 9/11 just around the corner, non profit organization OneDaysPay.org's mission is "to encourage people everywhere to set aside time every September 11 to help others in need". I am helping KACF, a Korean community organization to host an event on September 11th (see here), featuring the distinguished ensemble with a jazzy fusion blend of sound, the Ahn Trio. Proceeds go to support KACF's existing grantees.

Please join us on Thursday, August 25 as we launch our expanded In the Works program. This year, Second Generation is entering a new phase in our efforts to develop new works by Asian American writers, and bring these works to ever wider audiences in collaboration with established theaters across the country. We are reaching out to discover new writers through our open call for scripts (details below), as well as new works by established Asian American playwrights, such as Michael Golamco, who we are delighted to welcome back to 2g with his newest play.

Second Generation presents "A Shadow on the Moon", the new play by Michael Golamco (author of "Cowboy vs. Samurai" and "Achievers"). "A Shadow on the Moon", directed by Lloyd Suh, takes place in an eerily snowbound Los Angeles, where siblings reunite for a battle over newly sacred ground; it is a battle about obligation, devotion, and a place where spirituality and mental illness collide. Join us after the reading for a "Talk Back" with the artists followed by refreshments. Make your reservation online at http://www.2g.org/home/productions/intheworks.php. Seating is limited. Reservations are required.

Another Public Enemy (Gonggongui Jeog 2) (2005)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 148 min
Directed by Kang Woo-suk
Starring Sol Kyung-gu, Jeong Jun-ho, Kang Shin-il, Park Geun-hyeong

Kang Woo-suk (Two Cops, Silmido) steps back into the director's chair for Another Public Enemy, the winning follow-up to his 2002 box office hit, Public Enemy. Sul Kyung-ku (Rikidozan: A Hero Extraordinary, Silmido) once again plays a character named Kang Chul-joong, but this time around he's not portraying a corrupt police detective hunting a serial killer, but is instead a dedicated prosecutor who likes to throw himself into the thick of the action!

Things start to heat up considerably in this highly successful sequel when ace legal eagle Kang takes on the case of Han Sang-woo (The Legend of Evil Lake's Jeong Jun-ho), a former high school classmate and the future chairman of the Myung-Sun Foundation. Despite his innocent facade, Kang's old friend looks to be guilty of bribery, embezzlement, and even murder! But with Han always one step ahead of Kang, what can our hero do to bring this white collar "public enemy" to justice? Find out in director Kang Woo-suk's provocative look at the illicit relationship between big business and Korea's shadowy underworld!

Ms. Hyun-Ock Im will give a brief introduction to the film and lead a discussion afterwards.

KACF (Korean American Community Foundation) invites you to the joint benefit concert with the International Sejong Soloists (ISS), featuring the Ahn Trio, on Sunday, September 11th, 2005 at the Knitting Factory, New York City. There will be two shows performed by the Ahn Trio, with an autograph signing session following the afternoon performance and an after-show party following the evening performance. Tickets will be sold exclusively through The Knitting Factory at www.knittingfactory.com/kfny/

The Ahn Trio's dynamic and nuanced performances have earned it a place as one of the world's innovative piano trios. Sisters Maria, Lucia, and Angella are redefining the art and architecture of chamber music, with commissions from composers as diverse as Kenji Bunch, Minimalist composer Michael Nyman, and Academy-Award winning composer Maurice Jarre. The Ahn Trio continually breaks away from tradition, most recently for their tours with the David Parsons Dance Company, in which both trio and dancers share the stage in a unique duet of image and sound. The sisters have also successfully fused fashion and classical music, with appearances in GQ, Vogue, and advertisements for the Gap. They were named three of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People Magazine. The Ahn Trio is in high demand, performing and leading master classes and workshops across the United States and around the world. Wherever the Ahn sisters go they share their collaborative spirit and ever-evolving vision of music.

KACF was formed in 2002 as a vehicle for Korean Americans to help their neighbors through fundraising and other capacity-building support to Korean American community social service organizations and programs. Over the past two and a half years, KACF's primary program has been providing grants to social service agencies that serve marginalized segments of the Korean-American community, such as youth from economically disadvantaged families, senior citizens, the developmentally challenged, low-income and recent immigrants. Each year, KACF considers additional grantees for new challenges facing the Korean-American community such as victims of human trafficking public health related issues. The KACF-ISS joint benefit concert is just one of the many fundraising events that the organization is planning, along with reaching out to the individual donors, to assist such grantees.
