September 16th 2004: Issue 17
Sorry for sending the mailer so often the past few weeks, but there are a few big events this week you do not want to miss. This year's annual Flushing Chusok Festival, one of the biggest Korean events of the year for the New York metro area, is normally held during the first week of October, but this year will be on the 18th and 19th. For those of you who listen to Korean music (or used to, when Deux and Roo'ra performed at the Festival in 95), the artists slated to come this year are MC Mong, Jewelry, Eun Ji Won, Dong Bang Shin Ki (DBSK), and Tei. If you actually know who these guys are (ok, well I do know Jewelry), and you want to see them perform, get ready to show up early for a good seat. Don't mark my words, but the concert is supposed to start around noon or so, so that means all of the teeny-boppers show up around 8am to grab all the good seats (actually more like good standing room). Apparently DBSK is judging an audition on Saturday (usually the day before the festival there is a talent show and weak-ass Miss Korea pageant) to look for people for a new SM Town boy band called OKAY/SMILE. So break out your dancin' shoes, but don't obssess too much over these k-pop stars or soon you will be buying those weird Prada robots too.
And if you are too Korean-cultured-out this weekend, stop by Little Italy for the 77th Annual San Genarro Festival which starts today, for a little infusion of Italian culture (or food at least).
Asian men—another proud William Hung moment for us to celebrate! A friend of mine sent me a link to a book that instructs white men how to attract Asian women and another book that instructs Asian men, yep you guessed it, how to attract white women. I especially like some of the readers' reviews to the book.

As every year, there are a few Chusok Festivals, but the Flushing Meadow Festival is the largest of them all. The New Jersey one will be held at Overpeck Par in Leonia, New Jersey on Sunday September 26th from 11:00am - 5:00pm. Traditionally the one in Manhattan is held the week after the one in Flushing, but I don't have that information confirmed.
Since 1982, this event has not only become the premier cultural event for the Korean American community, but has drawn New Yorkers of different ethnic backgrounds from throughout the city. Chusok, the Korean Harvest Festival (Korean Thanksgiving), is celebrated every year in Flushing Meadows Park. Expect music, dancing, and eating. The Festival is a major celebration for the Korean community in New York. The first day of the celebration is the warm-up for performers, and the crowds will come out on Sunday, September 19, for the main event.
Korean American League for Civic Action (KALCA) needs volunteers to help register and educate Korean American voters at the two Chusok Festvals. Volunteers will help register voters, distribute voter education materials, and collect voter pledges to participate in the General Elections. Korean speaking volunteers are especially welcome! Please contact veronica@kalca.org if you can volunteer for an hour or two.

"Reaching Out to Community - Forging Immigrant Culture through Poongmul"
BK Party is a daylong festival of traditional Korean drumming and food. The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for communities to build relationships and to develop understanding through sharing out rich cultural heritages. The BK Party has been scheduled during the week of the Korean holiday, Choo-suk. By having the BK Party aligned with the celebrations of Choo-suk we are able to share this joyous holiday with the Korean American and non-Korean community.
One of the main objectives of the BK Party is to encourage interactions between different cultural groups. This year, the BK Party is scheduled to take place in Harlem. Harlem, a region of NYC rich in African American culture and history, is also the home of many Korean-owned businesses. By celebrating BK Party in Harlem, Korean-owned business owners are given a great opportunity to connect with the residents and to give back to the community. Every year approx 100 Poongmul players participate in BK Party: college poongmul clubs and community poongmul groups in NYC metropolitan area.

CALL FOR ENTRIES
MTV Documentary - My Life Translated
We are working on a documentary special for MTV which features transcultural young adults, entitled My Life (Translated), and is hosted by actress/MTV personality SuChin Pak. The show has been successful for MTV as a sincere, honest program that explores and educates issues surrounding transculturalism. We are now producing a story on transcultural adoptions and exploring the issues and struggles that arise when a young adult has decided to begin the journey of reconnecting with their heritage or continue their journey.
Raised in an American culture, what happens when a young adult decides to explore a new ethnicity? What stereotypes must they challenge? How do their adoptive parents feel about the decision? Do the parents pressure them to remain Americanized? Seeking to readopt their ethnic heritage, do they face criticism from the ethnic community they want to join? What happens when parents encourage reconnection, but the child just isn't interested? How does a young adult maintain a crucial balance of cultural experiences?
If you are interested in sharing your journey with MTV, email us at MLT@mtvstaff.com. Tell us about your experiences and how your parents feel (or might feel) about your decision. Be sure to include your name, age and the best way to contact you. Keep in mind we are attempting to create a very positive story about the process and the journey, and share the unique experiences of transcultural adoptees in America.
