October 3rd 2005: Issue 42

With the deadlines for 78th Academy Awards selections approaching, Korea's fourth best-selling film of all time behind Tae Guk Gi, Silmido, and Friend, Welcome to Dongmakgol, released earlier this year, was selected as Korea's entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category. South Korea has never had an entry selected as one of the five final nominations, but with Korean film gaining popularity in recent years, things may change. Meanwhile in Japan, Yon-sama fever was revived with the release of Bae Yong Jun's most recent film, April Snow. Japanese daily Sankei Sports reported at a cinema in Tokyo on the first day of release that 99 percent of the audience members were women. Some guys have all the luck...

Even if your not Bae Yong Jun, good news for you other 386'ers (born in the 60's, went to college in the 80's, now in their 30's) that grew up in Korea. Robot Taekwon V has finally completed its long awaited 3-year restoration. The restored film is scheduled to be screened during the well established upcoming 10th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) on October 6th - 14th.

And suprise, surprise--according to a new study by South Korea, Koreans rank fourth in hard liquor consumption. Four out of ten Koreans "drink to excess, consuming more than one bottle of the local variety soju per session". Maybe it was the convenience of lunchbox packable containers...

TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY
North Korea's Mass Games

Saturday October 1st - October Tuesday 4th
Saturday October 8th - October Tuesday 12th
Saturday October 15th - October Tuesday 18th
North Korea!
www.koryogroup.com

Due to 13 years of running tours to North Korea (DPRK) Koryo Tours have been given exclusive access for US citizens (American passport holders) to visit North Korea for this year's mass games Arirang festival. The festival began on August 16th and its finish date has been extended to Oct 17th. US citizens will be allowed into the country for October only and only for a limited period. There have only been two opportunities for US citizens to visit North Korea as tourists, (1995 and 2002 for mass game festivals when Koryo took over 100 US tourists to DPRK). After Oct 17th US citizens will once again be unable to obtain DPRK visas.

The Mass Games performance opened on August 15th to mark the 60 years since the liberation of Korea from the Japanese and will continue until October 17th. On October 10th , the mass games will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Workers Party of Korea founded by Kim Il Sung and currently run by the man who has been giving 'on the spot guidance' to these mass games performances, the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il.

EXHIBITION
Karen Kang: 23rd Annual BWAC Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition

Now Through October 7th
Empire Fulton-Ferry State Park
26 New Dock Street
Brooklyn, NY
www.karenkang.com

Sculptor Karen Kang has created a community of sculptures, in which each of the five pieces speaks of the degrees of openness of our most intimate relationships. While standing strong individually, each is also a part of the larger whole. They sit within an open arched bamboo structure that simultaneously encloses the sculptures while exposing them to the surrounding environment. The work exhibits the play between our internal nature and external nurture.

THEATER
The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow

Now thru October 15th
Tuesday - Friday, 8:00pm
Saturday 2:00pm and 8:00pm
Sunday 3:00pm
Atlantic Theater Company
336 West 20th Street
New York City
$50.00
www.atlantictheater.org

Jennifer Marcus, ensconced in the messy fortress of her bedroom, clicking away at the keyboard and refusing to take out the garbage, is a suburban mom's worst nightmare, for sure. But the feisty heroine of "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow," a new play by Rolin Jones, isn't beaming instant messages to her girlfriends, retailing gossip about boys or news of shoe sales. She's swapping technospeak with rocket scientists, hellbent on creating her very own android. This boldly imagined, even far-fetched notion provides the dramatic impetus for Mr. Jones's fanciful comedy, which has been staged with playful affection by Jackson Gay. The glaring topicality of the title is a little misleading. The play, at the Atlantic Theater Company, does not concern itself with the possibility of divine intervention in the course of human evolution. The intelligent design is Jennifer's scheme to whip up that robot, who will be dubbed Jenny Chow and will venture where her homebound creator cannot. Although much of the play consists of e-mail exchanges improbably cast in dialogue form, "The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow" possesses a brisk theatricality that attests to Mr. Jones's own assured design skills and his gift for capturing the voices of pleasingly curious characters.

WORKSHOP
9/11 Stress Management Workshop for Asian Americans

October 3rd, 7:00pm
YKASEC Offices
136-19 41st Avenue, 3rd Floor
Flushing, New York
www.ykasec.org

In the aftermath of September 11th, a number of public and private initiatives have been implemented to provide various forms of assistance, including mental health support, to affected individuals in New York City and surrounding areas. The immense need for pyschological care resulting from this tragedy has heightened public attention paid to mental health issues and raised social accpetance of help-seeking to a degree. However research reveals that Asian Americans vastly underutilize this assistance.

With funding from the American Red Cross, Young Korean American Service & Education Center (YKASEC) and Korean Community Services (KCS) will hold a workshop regarding stress management as part of the 9/11 recovery program. Lydia Choi will manage the workshop.

EXHIBITION
Haejae Lee: Postulated Space

October 8th - 30th, 12:00 - 6:00pm
Opening reception: Saturday, October 8th, 5:00 - 7:00pm
PS122 Gallery

www.ps122gallery.org | www.haejaelee.com

PS122 Gallery is pleased to present works by Lisa Dahl and Haejae Lee. Lisa will show her works from the series, "There Goes the Neighborhood" and Haejae will show paintings from the series, "Postulated Space". PS122 Gallery is a not-for-profit alternative space which provides exhibition opportunities and support services for emerging and under-recognized artists. The gallery is one of the only non-profit spaces which allows unrepresented artists to show their work in two person exhibitions. Ten shows are produced annually, seven of which are selected by jurors - a panel of art professionals that changes annually. Three additional shows are selected by the gallery director and are generally large group shows.

"The concept of my work is based on the conceptual and psychological meanings of home. The great American houses of the West draw me in particular because they seem to manifest a longing for a perfect home. Although a great deal of emphasis is placed on the physical characteristics of actual space, the focus of my inquiry into home is our idea of home. The interiors of the homes are described with true to life articulation. By avoiding the interpretation of real space, I hope to encourage the emotional displacement of my audience. Ultimately, my goal is to reexamine this postulated space and reconsider what we believe about it.

Many people have an intimate relationship with a place called home. If not, they might feel the absence of this place like I do, and have an intimate relationship with the idea of home instead. My immigration to the United Sates as a teenager pushed me through many stages of unprepared adjustment. Without a home, I struggled with the responsibility of providing a sense of safety for myself. My longing for a home is the motivation behind my project. Through my paintings, my intention is to explore this space called home."
