October 15th 2006: Issue 59
As North Korea, the Terrell Owens of the world news front, continues its clamour for attention, the United States and Japan (with newly elected PM Shinzo Abe pushing to revise its pacifist constitution) back in the state of nuclear psychosis similar to one that brought about 1994's Agreed Framework, expect to see increased airings of documentaries about the North, such as Abduction, which just recently aired on CNN. Count on getting your normal dosage of propoganda demonizing North Koreans, heck, Koreans altogether (cue yet another dog-eating joke on Leno). And with Susan Ralston, the highest-ranking Asian Pacific American in the White House recently resigning in light of the Abramoff scandal, it looks like it's going to be a long winter for Asian Americans.
The flurry of current events is a good reminder for a renewed call for the mobilization of Asian American voters for increased representation and on these and other political issues that affect us. The November 7th mid-term election is just 3 weeks away, and while it's not the Presidential election, a vote during this election may count more. Read an inspiring editorial by Elena Ong, a Public Affairs & Policy Consultant, about the power of your one vote.

MOVIE OPENING
Conventioneers (2005)
Conventioneers (2005)
USA, English, color, 95min
Directed by Mora Mi-Ok Stephens
Starring Matthew Mabe, Woodwyn Koons, Alek Friedman, Alicia Harding, and Jennifer Brown
Director Mora Mi-Ok Stephens and Producer Joel Viertel will be doing Q&A's during the opening weekend.
Mora Mi-Ok Stephens' critically acclaimed and award-winning feature directorial debut, Conventioneers, a romance between two political opposites at the 2004 Republican National Convention, provoked questions about the political divide in the U.S. Shot entirely in NYC during the Republican National Convention, Mora was arrested and detained for 14 hours during the shoot. The film -- her NYU thesis -- had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival and its international premiere at the Pusan International Film Festival. The historical film has played at nearly 20 festivals worldwide--winning the Grand Jury Prize at the Florida Film Festival and the John Cassavates' Award at the 2006 Independent Spirit Awards.
To commemorate Mora's achievement of being the first Korean director to receive the highly coveted Independent Spirit Award, the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles hosted a special screening of Conventioneers, which officially kicked off its inaugural monthly Korean American Filmmaker Series. Last month, Mora was one of five filmmakers selected to participate in the first ever Korean Film Council (KOFIC) Filmmaker Development Lab in Hawaii. She is en route to Pusan this week with her political thriller, The 38th Parallel, to participate in the Pusan Promotion Plan (PPP), Asia's first and biggest project market, at the 2006 Pusan International Film Festival.
"A successful mix of scripted drama with on-location improv, and a rare instance of U.S. narrative cinema that engages the politics of the moment, Mora Stephens' Conventioneers refreshes on several levels. . ." - Variety

Developing Leadership & Building Multicultural Communities
The Queens College Asian / American Center cordially invites you to a luncheon reception and discussion on Asian Americans in New York City:
Developing Leadership & Building Multicultural Communities. The Asian/American Center at Queens College was established in September 1987 in response to the dramatic increase of Asians in the Borough of Queens and the New York metropolitan area. It is dedicated to developing community-based research that chronicles the diaspora experience of Asians in local and global communities. The Center views the diverse experiences of Asians in the Americas as complex, multicultural phenomena that are constantly in process, with traditions being reinterpreted and identities recreated. It seeks to foster scholarship, dis-seminate information, and create awareness about Asian American issues, as well as serve as a liaison between the University and the community, media, and other city and national agencies. The Center's research and programming focus is reflected in its working papers, books, conferences, forums, and services such as its Translation Program. Now, yKAN is really trying to warm up this cold season by providing a free flu shot event to the Korean-American community. For this free flu shot drive, yKAN Community Service is partnering with Korean Community Service (KCS) and the Visiting Nurse Services of NY (VNS) with Department of Health. Many thanks to VNS with Department of Health for providing the flu vaccine and their services.
Did you know that Influenza (flu) causes an average of 40,000 deaths each year in the U.S., mostly among the elderly?! Shortage on flu shots affects so many during the flu season every year, so why not help us provide 400 flu shots to the Korean community! Bring your parents, grandparents, and loved ones* to get immune from the flu virus this year! Just make sure that you are not allergic to eggs (* Priority of receiving flu shots are 50 yrs old. Must be 18 yrs and older). They are expecting 400+ Koreans to show up during the event and they need about 5 - 10 volunteers to help fill out flu shot registration forms, lining people, translate questions, and make sure the people sit down for 5 minutes after getting a flu shot.
