FILM RELEASE
A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon) (2003)
Don't forget to read our review of A Tale of Two Sisters here.
Tartan Films will release A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon), the top-grossing Korean horror movie of all time, in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego (with more cities to come) on Friday, December 17th.
This supernatural horror film from Kim Jee-woon is inspired by the ancient Korean folktale "Jangha and Hongryun." Set in an isolated lakeside house, it begins with two close sisters, Su-mi (Im Su-jeong) and Su-yeon (Mun Geun-yeong), returning home after a period of hospitalization following the death of their mother. But, being back home doesn’t seem to please the two sisters very much. In the meantime, their father Mu-heon (Kim Gab-su) has married Eun-ju (Yeom Jeong-ah), whom the girls obviously despise. Since the death of their mother, the stepmother has ruled the house with an iron fist. Having to live under the same roof as the stepmother is a nightmare for them. Su-mi has tried many times to explain the situation to her father, but his relationship with the stepmother and his disbelief has insured no result. Strange, violent visions begin to disturb Su-mi and she becomes convinced that Eun-joo is keeping a dark secret from the family.

According to the philosopher Wilhelm Dilthey, a thinker’s or an artist’s Weltanschauung is not really his imaginative “vision of the world”; it is his comprehensive answer to the question “What is the meaning of life?” Haesook Kim’s lifelong inquiry into “the riddle of life” necessarily includes the metaphysical or the afterlife. She began her search as a youngster when her artistic imagination led her to investigate the phenomena of the lifecycle. She buried dead animals in transparent coffins or cultivated plants in glass containers in an effort to preserve their beauty and color but instead witnessed their subsequent degeneration and eventual passing. And, while carefully monitoring these changes she experienced the realization of death even while expecting to see the emergence of a soul. Nevertheless, even now as an adult, she persists in her attempts to regenerate, renew, revitalize and breathe life into her medium—inert skins—that she arranges into flowers.
Tenri Cultural Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 1991. The mission of the Institute is to promote the study of Japanese language, the appreciation of international art forms, and to foster understanding and harmony in the community. Through its diverse programs, the Institute hopes to draw together the multi-ethnic people of New York City to engage in cross-cultural dialogue and exchange.

Tradition, appeasement, betrayal: the West comes to exploit Japan in the mid 19th century, but who wins and who loses? Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman’s landmark 1976 musical is staged by renowned Japanese director Amon Miyamoto. Spanning 150 years, Pacific Overtures tells the story of Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in the “Floating Kingdom” of Nippon in 1853. The musical chronicles the influence America had upon Japan, detailing and dramatizing the westernization of Japanese culture. The style of the musical is based on the ancient form of Japanese Noh theatre.
Tony Award winner B.D. Wong ("M. Butterfly", OZ, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and a cast of Asian-American actors star in this brilliant tale of culture clash. A show of sheer theatrical genius, Pacific Overtures features Sondheim's most daring music-an adventurous blend of Broadway razzle-dazzle and pure Eastern beauty. Visionary Japanese director Amon Miyamoto brings a fresh perspective to this American musical masterpiece.
During the theatrical run of Pacific Overtures, the lobby of Studio 54 will feature an installation of rarely seen imagery created at the time of the Perry, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Visualizing Cultures Project co-developed by Pulitzer-prize winner John Dower and Professor Shigeru Miyagawa.
