December 11th 2006: Issue 61
I am helping to organize the Korean American shorts festival portion of a larger festival in New York City celebrating Korean American Day, a holiday which only recently became recognized nationally as January 13th.
Celebrations are planned nationally and the New York portion is being spearheaded by the New York branch of MTM (the Korean acting academy and agency headquartered in Korea) and being sponsored by Korean Airlines. Other events
during the week long festival celebrating the holiday will be held in conjunction with the film portion,
including various musical performances, and other events celebrating Korean heritage. We are looking for shorts submissions. Please see the entry below for information regarding the festival.
Local resident Korean American rockstar Maggie Kim's video "Gimme One" recently made its world permiere on MTV K. And because of its apparent "adult content", it won't stay there very long--it will air for only a week. The video is up for voting on the Top 10 K Kountdown, so vote for it, and support local New York City KA talent! Maggie was also featured on New York radio's Q104.3 as the "Undiscovered Artist of the Week" with her song playing on the "Out of the Box" show. Congrats to Maggie who seems to have her star rising!
Yet another ignorantly racist "ching chong" moment? Rosie O'Donnell, on a recent "The View" show comments how Chinese people interpret Danny DeVito's drunken antics: "Ching chong, ching ching chong, Danny DeVito!". Her rep's response? "I certainly hope that one day [Asian Americans] will be able to grasp her humor." Well I hope I don't ever get it.

SCREENING
A Good Lawyer's Wife (Baramnan gajok) (2003)
A Good Lawyer's Wife (Baramnan gajok) (2003)
South Korea, Korean with English subtitles, color, 103 min
Directed by Im Sang-soo
Starring Mun So-ri, Hwang Jeong-min, Yun Yeo-jeong, Kim In-mum, and Bong Tae-gyu
Guest Speaker: Hyun-Ock Im, teacher, writer, and curator, as well as Consultant & Chief Editor for the Pusan Film Festival. Intense, erotic, and emotionally searing, this brilliantly acted study of infidelity and family crisis confirms Im Sang-soo (The President’s Last Bang) as a major filmmaking talent. An unsparing examination of a marriage in crisis, Im’s film is sexually bold and emotionally vivid, driven by brave performances and an improvisational energy. Ho-jeong (Moon So-ri) is the beautiful wife of busy lawyer Young-jak (Hwang Jung-min). Their marriage is functional but unsatisfying, and the two have turned to other partners for sexual satisfaction—Young-jak cavorts with a young model, which leads Ho-jeong to seduce the teenaged boy next door. Dealing with their own infidelities—as well as problems plaguing Young-jak’s parents—the married couple suddenly finds their duplicitous world shattered by a family tragedy, and they must decide where their relationship stands. Beautifully shot in widescreen by cinematographer Kim Woo-hyung, A Good Lawyer’s Wife is a courageous study of marital turmoil that is ultimately cathartic and healing in its masterful observations on love. – Travis Crawford

Thirty five year old Korean American Maria Yoon has been traveling America getting married. In just the last two years alone she has married 20 different grooms in 20 different states, and vows not to stop until she has married in all fifty states probably by the end of 2008. “Don’t be alarmed”, the prominent Manhattan based performance artist said in a recent interview: “ I come from a society in which the arranged marriage is the norm. I thought marrying strangers would be just as arbitrary, and perhaps a little more fun”. Ms. Yoon’s long awaited show has taken this idea to transform her experiences to the “stage”. Her humor and insight into Korean tradition is guaranteed to make it a memorable evening.
Maria Yoon a Korean-born artist lives and works in New York City. She holds a BFA from Cooper Union. Maria is also a recipient of the Alex Katz Award for a full tuition scholarship and summer residency in Maine, at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Maria the Korean Bride has been funded in part by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2002 and the resulting photographs and documentary film has been exhibited as a part of two-person show at the American Museum of Natural History Multicultural Education Department in New York City. In 2005, Maria the Korean Bride was accepted as a Fiscally Sponsored project of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) and continues to be exhibited throughout the United States and Korea including solo exhibitions and performances.

About Korean American Day
The U.S. Congress has designated January 13 as "Korean-American Day." Senator George Allen, Republican of Virginia, and Senator Richard Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, sponsored the resolution. The "Korean American Day" would be celebrated on January 13th. In the year 1903, January 13th marked the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to America.
Korean Americans, like the waves of immigrants that came to the United States before them, have taken root and thrived in this country through strong family ties, community support, and hard work. The influence of Korean Americans may be observed in all facets of American life, including, but not limited to, entrepreneurship, the arts, and education. The resolution also noted that members of the Korean-American community served with distinction in the U.S. armed forces during World War I, World War II and the Korean War. It also noted many other contributions of Korean-Americans in sports, medicine and the arts. The Korean-American community has been seeking such a designation since 2003.
Questions and Contact Information
Questions regarding the festival should be directed to David Kim daehoonkim@gmail.com or Eubin Kim eubin@yahoo.com.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Winter 2006 & Spring 2007 Internships for Undergraduate, Graduate, and Law Students
The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans through litigation, advocacy, and community education. Spring and Winter internships are available for college, graduate, and law students in AALDEF's Voting Rights Program. In prior elections, Asian Americans faced a series of barriers in exercising their right to vote; for example, ballots have been mistranslated listing Democratic candidates as Republicans and vice versa, lack of interpreters, denial of language assistance, rude and hostile poll workers. Then, when the news media reported on election returns and the vote by specific groups, Asian Americans were overlooked. AALDEF's Voting Rights Program aims to enhance the political participation of Asian Americans and guard against anti-Asian voter discrimination.
Voting Rights Interns work on the following:
Reviewing election monitoring reports to advocate for election reforms and compliance with the Voting Rights Act and federal Constitution. The Voting Rights Act mandates Chinese and Korean language voting assistance and forbids anti-Asian voter discrimination. This includes legal research and writing, fact pattern development, and working with clients and witnesses for possible litigation.
Documenting the use of bilingual ballots and reporting on Asian American voting patterns from AALDEF's multilingual multi-state voter survey.
Assess local elections compliance with settlements reached in voting rights lawsuits in Massachusetts and other states.
Registering new voters after citizenship swearing-in ceremonies.
Conducting research and advocacy on local, state and federal election reform proposals.
To Apply:
Bilingual ability is helpful but not required. Students with language ability in Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin), Korean, Bengali, Urdu, or Punjabi are especially welcome to apply and languages (if any) should be stated in the resume.
